Katrina – Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras in Louisiana allows us to celebrate Homecoming with images of laughter and excitement set upon the stage of New Orleans, in 2006. It was important for me to capture as complete a story as possible surrounding this natural disaster…the physical destruction, family loss as well as the stirring and rejuvenating festivities of Mardi Gras. I found myself, at the invitation of the Zulu Social Club, photographing their procession through the streets to uncontrollable noise, cheers, joy and fun. Zulu members had to re-make their costumes since previous ones were destroyed due to flooding.
The rebuilding process along the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina was not just about bricks and mortar, but primarily about the regeneration of the human spirit.
